About the Author
Mark Wigan is an artist, illustrator and academic. He was an early pioneer of trans-global club art in 1980s New York, London and Tokyo. Mark's work has evolved into a multimedia archive, chronicling the changing worlds of club culture and street style. For the past ten years, he has been lecturing worldwide and has led illustration programmes at a range of universities.

Good intentions but unimaginative writing

Having bought the entire AVA Academia range of Illustration books, I've read several of them already and know what to expect. It's a great series, however, Basics Illustration: Thinking Visually by Mark Wigan could have been easily improved with minor tweaking. Much of the information contained within is just echoed from "The Fundamentals of Illustration."

I understand that this is an 'introductory' level book, so I wasn't expecting anything life changing in it. The book has several areas where it lists further research for styles and contemporary trends in the industry. This is great; this is exactly what the book needed to deliver. The book also suggest projects for individual improvement as well as guidelines by which to judge and challenge oneself.

So why did I give it only four stars? (Really merits 3 1/2, but Amazon doesn't expressly give you that option.)

The writing seems at times lazy and cringe-inducing. Mr. Wigan is a good illustrator but is also a 'lister', and much of the text is one gigantic, unreadable, stale block of solid text with only commas for comfort. To ILLUSTRATE as it were, imagine if you were reading a 160 page book where most of the text was run-on, repetitive, redundant, listless, uninspired, overly didactic, systematic, expected, uninterrupted, rambling, dry, foreseen, bland, stale, robotic, programmed, trance-like, stagnant, blurry, unnecessary, echoing, monotonous, drivelling, homogenous, and mediocre.

To be fair, reading the last part of my review is a little too critical. It might have been the only way to condense the text, but the problem could have been more innovatively solved. This is one of the few series of books on the subject that is well developed and fairly continuous in its level of quality and visual polish. It's just the listing that marrs the title, severely, at times.

Thinking visually, but not typographically

This book is OK for inspiration thanks to its illustrations, but not very good for reading. The type setting is so poor, that your eyes get tired after reading one page. The author was thinking visually, but somehow forgot, that most books are meant to be read. This one will end up just to flip through. So, if you are thinking about buying it, look around, there are better books. Masters of Poster Design by John Foster is well worth the money for example.

Excellent first few steps into an unknown

This whole AVA book series, along with Teaching Illustration: Course Offerings and Class Projects from the Leading Graduate and Undergraduate Programs by Marshall Arisman and The Education of an Illustrator by Marshall Arisman, make for the perfect independently learning course outside of and Education Institution for a fraction of the cost to get started. One might be able to supplement the norms of education, providing one joins some of the societies and groups, as well as attend some of the conferences and museums activities. Works their backside off developing a reputation, portfolio, and countless contacts through networking. But this seems like it would need to be done in an over flooded educational system and job market anyway. Aside from that this would be beneficial to the life long animation student or artist in the sense that it will provide an awakening or rejuvenated refreshment on different ways to approach and create it. Each book provides an excellent example of project ideas to start, choose, or revise. They also have professional working examples, industry insights, and reference pictures or inspiration to boost things along. This helps rather than just dry reading.

Paul Elsner, Ed.D., (Senior Editor) received his doctorate from Stanford University and completed study at the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University. He is the Senior Editor of this Global Survey publication and the 2008 Edition. He serves on the Board of Directors for Sias International University in Zhengzhou, PRC, and has spoken and consulted in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Singapore, China, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Ireland, England, South Africa, and other countries. Elsner gave the Third Robert Atwell Distinguished lecture, following the first given by Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, and the second by Harvard President Neal Rudenstein. His previous appointments include ETS Board Chair at Princeton and the ACT Board at Iowa City. He also served as President of the Board for the League for Innovation and numerous Washington-based educational organizations and served as Chancellor of the Maricopa Community Colleges for 23 years. He is currently Founding Chair and Organizer of the Sias International Water and Global Warming Conference.

About the Author
Zhijun Zhang is a Professor of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. He holds rich industry experience, with senior positions as an antenna development engineer at Amphenol T&M Antennas, Nokia, and Apple, giving him a perspective of design practices at a number different players in the mobile segment. Prior to Tsinghua, his academic career included a postdoctoral fellowship and research professorship at the University of Utah, and a position as Assistant Researcher at the University of Hawaii, where he continues to serve as Adjunct Professor. Zhang earned a B.S. in Microwave Engineering and an M.S. in Applied Physics at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu. He holds a PhD in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University.

Great Practical Reference for Antenna Design

This book is great for describing what happens to external and internal antennas when you change different parameters like length, width, diameter, size of ground plane etc. While the book does not give great examples of designing a specific antenna it does give excellent information on how to tweak antenna parameters to get better bandwidth and correct resonant frequency with and without matching circuits.

The only reason I do not give a 5 star rating is because I was hoping for a design example from start to finish for different types of antennas.

For those wondering I am an Electrical Engineer just starting to learn more about Antennas and there design.

This is a really helpful book on antenna design, much more grounded in the realities of designing for products as opposed to the more theoretical and abstract nature of most texts on this subject. Highly recommended.

Among the contributors are Judy Grahn, author of lesbian/feminist works; Malcolm Boyd, activist Episcopal priest; Harry Hay, a founder of the Mattachine Society; and writer William S. Burroughs. Although the anthology will prove enlightening to nongays, they will be put off by Geoff Mains's "Urban Aboriginals and the Celebration of Leather Magic," an approving, detailed description of sadomasochism. A great overview of contempory gay spiritual thought

Having owned this book since the first edition came out, I was dumbfounded when I saw there were no reviews of it. I admit to some bias here since I know the author personally, but it is the best summary of current gay thinking on gay spirituality. The thrust of the book is that we gays are different in fundamental ways from straights. One of the most significant is our search for meaning outside of the instinct of perpetuating the species through the family. And when St. Paul kicks you out of church, you start seeking answers outside of conventional wisdom. All gays and lesbians should be acquainted with those who have struggled with finding those answers. Highly recommended
