About the Author
Greg Ogden (DMin, Fuller Theological Seminary) lives out his passion of speaking, teaching, and writing about the disciple-making mission of the church after spending twenty-four years in pastoral ministry. Most recently Greg served as executive pastor of discipleship at Christ Church of Oak Brook in the Chicago western suburbs. From 1998-2002, Greg held the position of director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Fuller Theological Seminary and associate professor of lay equipping and discipleship. Greg is the author of several books such as Unfinished Business, Discipleship Essentials, Transforming Discipleship, Leadership Essentials(with coauthor Daniel Meyer), and The Essential Commandment. He is a partner in the Global Discipleship Initiative (GDI), which trains, coaches, and inspires pastors and Christian leaders to establish indigenous, multiplying, disciplemaking networks, both nationally and internationally. Greg and his wife, Lily, have been married more than forty-five years and have one adult daughter and two grandchildren.

Daniel Meyer is a graduate of Yale University (B.A.), Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and Fuller Theological Seminary (D.Min.) and has served since 1997 as senior pastor of Christ Church of Oak Brook in Chicago's western suburbs. His weekly messages are broadcast on television, radio and the Internet and are frequently featured on PreachingToday.com. Additionally, Dan serves as on-air host and chairman of LIFE FOCUS, a multiple Emmy Award-winning television newsmagazine aired on PBS and other stations nationwide. Essential reading for all Christians in leadership positions

There is careful and deliberate direction, development and consistency in Greg Ogden's books on discipleship. First, in 'Discipleship Essentials' (1998/2007) Ogden presents a 25 chapter intensive course for building a life in Christ. Then, in 'Transforming Discipleship' (2003) he steps back from curriculum design to explain and justify the contextual, biblical and personal background to his vision for meaningful and sustainable church growth. Next, In 'Leadership Essentials' (2007), Ogden and Meyer tackle a multifaceted issue that confronts families, organizations, Institutions and Churches alike: the need for clearly defined, fully equipped, progressive, transformative and intentional leadership that multiplies influence, brings out the potential in self and others and, most importantly, extends God's kingdom.

Leadership Essentials consists of 12 chapters organized into four parts. Each chapter features five elements: (i) a core truth expressed in two or three sentences about Christian leaders and leadership, (ii) a verse or longer passage from the Bible to memorize, (iii) an 'inductive' study based on a Bible passage, (iv) a reading passage that exemplifies, explains and extends the key material in the chapter, and (v) an exercise that helps the reader or user group think about and apply the ideas in the chapter to a leadership situation that is familiar and important.

In Part One, 'The Character of a Leader', Ogden and Meyer begin by stating a purpose for leadership that is only realizable through a specific 'follower' orientation: Leading disciples fix their gaze on the holiness of Christ and seek to reflect this holiness in the character and conduct of their own lives'. Taking Jesus as the ultimate standard, leaders need to: root out impurity in their lives, cultivate the fruits of the Holy Spirit, dedicate and commit themselves daily and remember that God, alone, is the source of our power and privileges. Obviously, holiness is exacting and Christian leaders (not leaders who just happen to be Christians!) can prepare themselves for life-changing action and events through practice, repetition, routine, reflection, self-examination, obedience, effort, righteousness, trust, solitude, vision, desire, intention and planning. And yet, as leading disciples aim ambitiously to extend God's kingdom, they also need to guard their own hearts and souls. This involves, but is certainly not restricted to, avoiding selfish ambition and vain conceit (Phil. 2:1-11). Overall, the point is that humility cuts against the grain of worldly driveness just as Christian leadership, when properly understood, requires a counter-cultural approach that is not concerned about pleasing others.

In Part Two, we learn about the essential 'posture' of leaders. Chapter 4, details servant-leadership in and through the act of kneeling and not jostling for status and power. There are four important points to note: Servant leaders are not concerned about receiving praise, they are willing to give their lives so that God's vision for His people becomes a reality, they act as models or examples of what others can become, and they are ultimately committed to bringing out the best in others by empowering them. In Chapter 5, Ogden and Meyer highlight the importance and necessity of working in teams where everyone--not just some--has a part or a contribution to make. After all, through collaborative effort we can achieve more than what we can do individually. And concomitantly in Chapter 6, we see how leading disciples cannot survive alone with their own resources. Rather, 'Strong leaders know where their strengths and limitations lie' and draw on a 'daily relationship' with God that that is 'particular and personal', and in line with His gifting.

Part Three, 'The Vision of a Leader', covers several outcomes that all serve to bring glory to God. For example, in Chapter 7, 'The Compelling Christ', Simon Peter (Luke 5:1-11) illustrates Christian leadership in two ways: we are meant to submit ourselves to the shaping influence of Jesus, and we are called to the life and work that He has for us. Additionally, the vision of a leader incorporates and requires the foundational adoption of God's kingdom as the 'ultimate reality' that we must adapt to. Is this too exacting? Not in the slightest! As the authors stress, 'Our failure to adapt will be our loss. ... being Jesus' disciple may seem costly, but the cost of nondiscipleship is much greater' (p. 114). Lastly, for this part, we understand that visionary leadership is activated when we help others see God's vision. There are four common characteristics of Godly visions worth noting as the bases for strategic and tactical application: Godly visions (i) depict outcomes that are impossible in the absence of God's power and energy, (ii) bring glory to God (not individuals and institutions), (iii) display the character and desires of God, and (iv) become contagious (pp. 126-127).

The final part, 'The Shaping of a Leader', turns to some of the personal and formational aspects of leadership. In Chapter 10, 'Taming Temptation', Ogden and Meyer warn us that Christian leaders who do not root their identity in Christ, expose themselves to the temptations of money, power or sex as gap-fillers. And further, when we let others define and control us through their expectations and approval (or lack of it) we leave ourselves open to 'role diversion' and attack. Interestingly, Chapter 11 uses Psalm 139 to show how leaders need confidence and humility in facing the resistance they are bound to encounter against their leadership. Moving forward, there are no less than six ways to creatively conquer criticism that are meant to build us up in the process. In the last chapter, the authors identify disappointment (things don't turn out as we had hoped), frustration (others have let us down), failure, worthlessness (our burden is too heavy, others do less; we're taken for granted) and loneliness as leadership pitfalls. Yet, we can regain heart and defeat negativity through a number of steps including: daring to cry for help, learning from mistakes (as we gain maturity) and remembering, always, whose kingdom prevails.

In my experience as a church leader and university academic with some reporting officer duties and responsibilities, I need to be secure in my identity (knowing who I am) and what motivates me to keep going (cf. p. 46). Over the years I've read several books on leadership including, Mellichamp's (1997) 'Ministering in the secular university, Cloud and Townsend's (2003) 'Making small groups work: What every small group leader needs to know', and Blanchard and Hodges' (2005) 'Lead like Jesus: Lessons from the greatest leadership role model of all time', but Leadership Essentials is distinctive for two main reasons. First and foremost, Ogden and Meyer ground the art of multiplying influence through leadership in discipleship; that is discipleship precedes leadership as a necessary precondition. Second, the authors have designed the curriculum structure and materials to be suitable for a range of instructional contexts including: existing leadership groups, leadership farm groups, mentoring relationships, small groups or Bible classes and aspiring individuals (p. 11).

My recommendation. Leadership Essentials is a well-structured, Bible-based and flexible leadership curriculum tool written by two very experienced, knowledgeable pastors with a vision for building and extending God's kingdom tactically and strategically. In my opinion, each chapter, and the book as a whole, will educate, challenge and search every serious and critically reflective reader. Overall, this book deserves consideration as part of any forward-thinking church leadership programme or individual and personal development and growth agenda.

Excellent Tool For Developing Christ-Like Leaders

Ogden in Meyer have done a great service to the church by putting together this helpful leadership mentoring workbook in order to bring bonding and multiplying influence to ministry oriented leadership teams. I have personally used the book for several years know with church staff, elders, deacons, interns, and in order to train budding leaders. I have found that each environment I've used it in, (one on one, triads, and groups up to 12) there has been good discussion, accountability, and encouragement towards Christ-like development.

The workbook is broken down into four sections with three chapters in each section:

Part One: The Character of a Leader

1) Holy - Developing a vision of Christ-like Character
2) Habitual - Cultivating spiritual disciplines to sustain leadership
3) Humble - Keeping watch over your souls

Part Two: The Posture of a Leader

4) Kneeling - Embracing servant love as our primary model
5) Teaming - Building teams to accomplish our corporate mission
6) Stewardship - Stewarding gifts, passions and personality

Part Three: The Vision of Leaders

7) The Compelling Christ - Loving passionately the compelling Christ
8) Embracing the Kingdom - Engaging people in mission
9) Helping Others See - Lifting people out of lethargy and inertia

Part Four: The Shaping of a Leader

10) Taming Temptation - Facing the Dangers of money, sex, and power
11) Conquering Criticism - Handling criticism with humility and fortitude
12) Defeating Discouragement - Addressing disappointment, frustration, anger, and depression

Each chapter contains a core truth which flows from the Bible; a memory verse (there are actually several verses to memorize per chapter); an Inductive Bible Study with questions based on the specific topic being discussed; a classic reading on the topic; and leadership exercises or applications for each topic.

Overall it's an excellent tool to use with current leaders; potential leaders; or even for any small group that wants to grow in the area of leadership and Christ-likeness. I have found it to be one of the best leadership development tools I have used in ministry and therefore, recommend it highly. It also makes a terrific sequel to Ogden's previous workbook on Discipleship called Discipleship Essentials.

Best book on leadership I have read

Usually I have been disappointed by Christian books on leadership. Most start with a secular framework then paste on some Bible verses. Others start with a biblical framework but soon wander from it. This book starts and ends with thoroughly biblical thinking. Because of that it is profoundly helpful and deeply practical. I will be recommending this book.
