About This Edition: New Features

  • New: A video created specifically for Horizons, "Les Stagiaires," integrates the vocabulary and grammar from each chapter into a storyline of two new interns working at an office. Their daily interactions and adventures with their coworkers depict real-life uses of French in a variety of situations, allowing students to practice listening skills with the vocabulary and structures they have studied up to that point. Brief episodes appearing in the "Reprise" section of each chapter are accompanied by viewing activities.

  • New: The "Sélections Musicales" sections have been expanded to include the use of French music as an engaging way to teach culture, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. In addition to the presentation and activities occurring after every two chapters, there will now be student notes in each "Compétence" suggesting francophone songs that illustrate the use of the vocabulary or grammar being studied. These songs are all easily found and downloadable via iTunes˜, and include a variety of types of music from different francophone countries. In the new edition, these student notes are called "Sélections Musicales," and the more extensive treatment of songs with pre- and post-listening activities found every other chapter were renamed "Interlude Musical." Over half of the songs in these sections have been replaced with new selections.

  • New: Pronunciation activities have been added after each pronunciation explanation providing students with additional practice opportunities of this important skill.

  • New: A completely new art program and interior design. Illustrations have been updated and redrawn with a more consistent and contemporary-looking style.

  • Updated: The geo-cultural openers, along with the "Notes Culturelles" and end-of-chapter "Comparaisons Culturelles," have been updated to present the very latest cultural evolutions.

  • Updated: The Workbook / Lab Manual has been reorganized into one complete Student Activities Manual, with the listening / speaking practice and the writing activities for each "Compétence" grouped together, instead of in separate sections.

  • New: A new, more robust testing program provides a greater variety of testing options.

Review
"Horizons is a well-rounded program which does a good job of balancing communication and mechanics in language learning."

"…I like the general organization of the book, the presentation, the modernity of the characters and the stories. I also like the scope and sequence and the student activities is absolutely great. I would add that it's very student friendly and that it can also be easily used at home. I would say it's a good learning tool with of lot of possibilities for each type of learners."

"Horizons is a very thorough, interactive program with ample opportunities for different types of learners. The activities are relevant and the exercises are repetitive enough to ensure acquisition of the French language at the introductory level."

"Horizons is well-contextualized. It features a wide variety of Francophone areas and cultural information, which is increasingly important in our world today."

"I am thrilled to find out about the new online recourses. I will also be glad to use a new video…"

Looseleaf: Can't Sell Back; Prone to Damage
By Amazon Customer
I purchased this book through my school bundled with the workbook and online registration code. This is a looseleaf book and cannot be sold back through the college bookstore nor, as of this writing, through Amazon (look for that little "Book Trade-In" banner by Amazon). I am not thrilled with this purchase.

The looseleaf version does not withstand normal wear and tear. In fact, it is more likely to lose pages if you leave it unbound. It will become damaged through normal use even if you put it in a binder (the holes become torn) and you are likely to lose pages due to this damage.

Having seen both the fourth edition and the fifth edition, I can honestly say that there is no significant difference. There are some students in my class who are able to use the fourth edition book with little to no issue while we are reading from the fifth edition.

The audio portion of the book does not work well. To access the audio, you must purchase an online access code through Cengage ($35). The audio tracks do not stream fully so you must download the entire track. In theory, online access is a good idea because anywhere you have access to the internet, you can access helpful tools along with the audio, but it is poorly implemented and extremely flawed. My class has had problem after problem accessing the online portion of it.

If, however, you have problems with carrying too much weight to class, using this looseleaf book could be your best bet. If you know which pages you'll need for the class, you can leave a majority of the book at home while only bringing with you the pages you need. This can prevent damage to the book, but if you are like me, you need the entire book for reference purposes.

Overall, I would not recommend this book to instructors and students alike. I would even go so far as to complain to Cengage (the publisher) that they must seriously reconsider their editing choices for this edition and their choices for distributing the book to student and teacher.

Expensive!!!
By GypsySparrow
This is an excellent book with amazing tools to help you learn a language. It covers everything from listening, speaking/pronunciation, reading, writing/grammar and a little bit of culture. But it's bloody expensive!

Got this book as my wife was taking a French class at a local community class. She had no problems with it at all.
