About the Author

William Makepeace Thackeray was a nineteenth century English novelist who was most famous for his classic novel, Vanity Fair, a satirical portrait of English society. With an early career as a satirist and parodist, Thackeray shared a fondness for roguish characters that is evident in his early works such as Vanity Fair, The Luck of Barry Lyndon, and Catherine, and was ranked second only to Charles Dickens during the height of his career. In his later work, Thackeray transitioned from the satirical tone for which he was known to a more traditional Victorian narrative, the most notable of which is The History of Henry Esmond. Thackeray died in 1863.

The racy memoirs of the Irish braggart and rogue who flourished, if that's the right word, in the late 1700s, are delightfully imagined by one of the great Victorian writers. Even more than Dickens, his contemporary, Thackeray can still beguile the modern reader, as is well testified in his first important novel. The recording begins with a tedious introduction that belabors the obvious and arrogantly tells us how to interpret what follows. John Cormack reads it dutifully before launching into an Irish accent and the main feature. He is sometimes very droll, but much of the irony of the narrative escapes him. Shocking rise (and fall) of a rogue as told by a Victorian worthy

Reading other reviews here I am amazed at the different (from mine) reactions. It is many years since I read the book; nevertheless it made an indelible impression. Having at the time only read and enjoyed the author's famous "Vanity Fair" and, long ago, "Pendennis," I was blown away by the totally unsentimental depiction of a entirely amoral anti-hero, scarcely to be expected in the work of any Victorian novelist. (The character of Becky Sharp in "Vanity Fair" is comparable, though her impact is considerably softened by the other, more conventional characters, as well as the third person story-telling.)

What most remains in my memory is the story of his pursuit of the wealthiest heiress in Britain. He wins her by the simple means of pursuing her relentlessly until she agrees to marry him just out of fatigue. (I've often thought that many a man could learn something about how to win a woman by reading this reprehensible account.) He then persecutes her young son cruelly, so viciously in fact that even he feels some regret for the suffering he causes the boy and his mother.

Told in the first person, the tale is so unvarnished and "in-your-face" that it seemed to me impossible to mistake the nature of the character Thackeray portrays. Though he constantly refers to his supposed aristocratic background, it is quite clear that like many another Irish opportunist, his lineage is nothing that a thousand others couldn't claim equally.

Essentially, this is a Victorian novel totally unlike any other Victorian novel I have ever read, and as such deserves many more readers than it has had, even allowing for those who picked it up after seeing the Kubrick movie (in my opinion a waste of film.)

Love Thackeray... Lyndon, not so much.

Thackeray is one of the greats, and I highly recommend Vanity Fair or his other works to anyone who enjoys Austen and is looking to explore other authors that came just after her.

But I didn't enjoy Barry Lyndon: the first two thirds are a treat, as young Barry slowly makes his way in the world... but his utter brutality to his wife (once he's finally got one) makes me cringe. He becomes so completely contemptible that the reader longs for his destruction, but it is so long it coming that when it finally arrives it comes as less of a triumph than a simple relief that the end is finally near.

A worthwhile read for students of Thackeray or his era, but not for someone reading primarily for personal pleasure.

A worthy audiobook version of a tragic story.

Even in the days of its original publication, BARRY LYNDON was not one of William Makepeace Thackeray's most popular novels, and it perhaps would have remained obscure had not the late film director Stanley Kubrick read it, loved it and decided to make a movie based around it during the 1970s. Anyone coming to the novel by way of the movie will find that "based around" is an accurate description. It isn't only because whole sections of the novel are either truncated, altered or done away with entirely in the movie; it's that the entire tone of Redman Barry/Barry Lyndon's unfortunate history is completely different, with the only shared component being that the protagonist ends his days a penniless victim of his own hubris and folly.

The chief difference between novel and movie is the boisterous telling of the tale by Barry himself in the former, as opposed to the frequent dry observations of an omniscient third-person narrator in the latter. Throughout the book, Redman Barry portrays himself in glowing terms at every interval, boasting of his physical attributes, his skill, his daring and his bravery as he strives to become a true "gentleman" at any price. With every utterance, he shows the reader how complete a liar and fraud he really is, self-centered and self-pitying to the end even when owning up once in awhile to his faults. It takes a good narrator to keep the listener eager to hear this pathetic man's narrative to the end, and Jonathan Keeble is uniformly excellent in giving voice to Barry as he tells his tale. Not only does he convey the title character's delusions of grandeur and blindness to his failings with complete convincing skill, he gives the little nuances that show the listener that Barry is very much a human being and not just a caricature of one. In the few moments of tenderness that Barry exhibits, particularly in regard to his young son Brian, Keeble makes it possible for us to see that this is a man with a heart, however little of it he shows throughout most of the novel. Keeble is equally adept at giving voice to the other characters in Barry's story----his mother, his wife, his nemesis Lord Bullingdon and the rest-----and as complex as the novel's story is you're swept along, wondering what will happen next.

At 15+ hours, this is a lot of book to go through...but it's so wonderfully performed that you're sorry when it's over. Recommended.

About the Author
Sent to Hawaii by the Sierra Club in 1969, John Wehrheim did a series of articles entitled 'Paradise Lost'; and never went back to the Mainland. He began photographing Taylor Camp in 1971; after 2 years living with both refugees and villagers in Asia, John began to seriously document this tree-house community, seeing it as both a traditional village and refugee settlement - a hippie refuges camp next to a crystalline stream in a tropical forest along a beach in Paradise Photographer, writer and filmmaker, John lives on Kauai with his wife and daughter. His most recent film is also called TAYLOR CAMP.

A magical place and time we all wish could have experienced

A perfect beauty of a book with fine art photographs and a true-to-what-really-happened-look at life in that magical wrinkle in time and space that was Taylor Camp, a tribal village of Hippies in Hawaii in the 1970s. It's a journey to the end of the road on the most remote and lush Hawaiian island, told by those that lived there, on the beach, on a stream, in the jungle in their treehouses.
This is a book to pass down to your children and grandchildren so that they never forget that for one brief shining moment, long ago when we were young, all things were possible. Taylor Camp

Paradise's cost?

"Exotic locations with beautiful women" accurately captures much but not all of the charm of this handsome study. John Wehrheim's skillful black-and-white photography from the early 70s conveys the light and warmth he enjoyed on the North Shore of Kaua'i. Here, Elizabeth Taylor's brother Howard gave land to thirteen feckless hippies who'd been the harbinger of what would change that island from a sleepy place in the sunset of the plantation era of sugarcane and pineapple into today's tourist and surfing mecca--witness pricy Princeville near the setting of the seven cleared acres known as Taylor Camp near Hanalei Bay, on the site of an old Hawaiian settlement of taro groves and graves.

Taylor gave it out of spite (the county wanted the land for a park) to the campers, who had been jailed after settling in a another island park. They were very young mainlanders, often from California, often well-off, and in March 1969, they took possession. They tried to go native: treehouses, plastic sheeting, and a beachfront property. Food stamps, a garden, and cultivation of "pakalolo" (the last endearing them to a few otherwise wary locals) sufficed. An eclectic chapel, happily naked parents and kids cavorting on the sands, many smiles--these fill the pages along with recollections of the residents, decades later. I was impressed how satisfied and healthy, given what I reckoned would be conditions of squalor and sloth, they look.

Then, as Liz visited, the puka shell craze began, and Surfer Magazine featured the shore on a cover and lavish page spread, the idyll ended. At its height, three hundred hippies and other wanderers and beach-bums flocked to a place too fragile to endure. In 1977, the state ordered Sam Lee to burn the camp, after evictions, although all left without resistance. The people are still waiting for their park on the site of the camp, even as other areas nearby get snapped up for development of condos and second homes. Let's hope it stays in the public domain.

And, as the mini-essays appended to the photos document (there's also a DVD released separately in 2008), the sunny smiles portrayed over and over in this well-designed book did not endure for all the campers. The jungle hid its own secrets among the treehouses by the end of the road. While many who came there to stay for a while or forever testify movingly, paradise's costs took their toll. Those raised there relate the difficulty of growing up so quickly, where few outsiders had attended school or were accepted, and among the counter-cultural mores and casual relationships that tended to be the Camp lifestyle.

Suzanne "Bobo" Bollin, one of many examples, typifies the profile. She left San Diego after run-ins with the police over pot. She jumped probation and fled with her girls to Kaua'i. She partied, she indulged, and she inhaled. Yet she bemoans the changes that her own arrival accelerated: "Go watch the sunset. People are getting so far away from what God wants us to do, we really need to get back to nature, and I am hoping that this book will help people do that."

Vietnam sent some there for peace--Calvin Kuamo'o tells his story, raised on the Big Island, fighting as an Asian for America, coming back from hell; "Taylor Camp gave me heaven." Spirituality, sexuality, and a lack of materialism attracted many to the allure of this unfrequented hideaway. Many stayed, one reason the population is three times that in 1969 on the island. Most of those interviewed reside somewhere throughout Hawai'i, although some--showing the changes once upon a time--had left the Camp for the Big Island as back then land was cheaper. D. Keakealani Ham Young describes conflicts between incomers and locals, how those around the Camp tended to keep their distance.

Many islanders tell of the passing of the old ways, the loss of respect for land passed down, as newcomers rushed in. They themselves often defend the island they have adopted: they respect the customs that their own enthusiastic presence has complicated by the entry of so many from elsewhere. Now, many whose roots are in the islands cannot afford to stay where their families raised them--I think of some of my own dorm mates back in college who had left O'ahu to study in L.A. I teach a few students now, in Southern California, who have since left that "rock" for the mainland, to find work and an affordable home.

John Wehrheim himself came to the islands in 1969, and married into a local family; his wife became mayor of the County of Kaua'i. Her opponent, also interviewed, lobbied for the hotels and houses that now dominate some of the island; she had wanted more farming. You can judge the results yourself.

His portrait, fair-minded and elegiac, begins with his deft survey of the squabbles and idealism that infused the Camp. His photos arrange towards "mauka" inland moving up from "makai," as he follows the pattern of sea to mountain. He shows us the residents living there near the end of the commune, 1976 or so in the village, as if on a guided tour. Photos and quotes comprise the main section. This then introduces the essays, from those who watched, battled, supported, and became Taylor Camp. The results stand as an eloquent picture of the hippie dream before it faded into the darkening ocean at twilight.

I am nearly finished with this book - but am reviewing early - if you are interested in Taylor Camp at all - you will LOVE this book. The first half of the book are original pix taken during the time of Taylor Camp with interviews and perspectives during that time... but what makes this book so special is the second half with the interviews of the persons in the book NOW - they look back on their time at Taylor Camp and you get a new perspective from those that actually experienced it or just lived in Kauai - and what that view of the Taylor Camp lifestyle and impact to Kauai was like.... It is soooo interesting - and have just come back from two weeks on the island - exploring and loving every bit of it - I couldn't help but be fascinated by this time in history - like no other. Anyways - if you like learning about a time and place during our country's history - the 60's and 70's and how the Vietnam war and other social issues affected many of the youth of our country - read this book .... lots of emotions - good and bad.... a very interesting read for sure.

Richard Y. Wang is Director of the MIT Information Quality Program (MITIQ), Codirector of the Total Data Quality Management Program at MIT (MIT TDQM), and University Professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where the first master's degree program in Information Quality has been established.

Yang W. Lee is Associate Professor at the Information, Operations, and Analysis Group in the College of Business Administration at Northeastern University.

Excellent quality information

The book provides a variety of predicate calculus models for describing, measuring and managing information quality. Material is an excellent balance between theory and practice, with case studies from a variety of projects and institutions.

Concise and helpful

After having finished an MBA, I am currently involved in the creation of a new company. Although most of the knowledge is in my books, the extension of it made me search for an alternative.

Using of this book was the answer to our need. It is a short and clear book that focuses in the most important things to consider, and we have used its reading to remember what we learned, and to build the fundations on our work afterwards. Not to forget the excel file that you can download and use for your business planning.

The Guide that Keeps on Giving

I'd give this impressive book an "MBA" rating - for Meticulous Business Audiences only.

Its contents are broad and deep enough to address the requirements of any-length plan, be it a 20-40 pager for a small and straightforward business or a "beauty parade" document of over 500 pages.

The chapters, collectively, are well organized according to the stages of the planning process and because each one explains the fundamental concepts associated with each stage, it sort of seems, when you're reading, like you're on an MBA-curriculum tour. I was reminded of The Ten-Day MBA by Steven A. Silbiger; however, this is closer to a traditional textbook. It's also *loaded* with relevant business planning tools and techniques that range from simple to sophisticated, and from qualitative to quantitative.

I don't see this only as a guide for preparing a document (i.e., the plan). It's not just for one-time use. In a bigger sense, I see it as a manual for drafting a blueprint for success - which is a year `round endeavor. That's what ultimately compelled me to *buy* the book after having first borrowed it from the library.

Graham Friend has compiled a very user friendly guide for any business looking to get off the ground, or simply trying to expand its overall operation. In business, any unclear strategies are rarely going to work; the psychic powers of employees in any organization usually aren't going to read the mind of the unclear head-honcho launching an unclear plan. Unfortunately, that happens more often than we'd like to see in the real world of business.

The good news is the information contained in this book will greatly eliminate the problems & help guide any organization towards a clear path of business success. The message is quite clear: Planning for success is the most effective way to prevent disasters; especially in the volitile world of 21st century business.
