I enjoyed this book so much. It includes beautiful pictures and short interviews with the cast. I learned so much about the decorations and costumes. Now I pay more attention to the screen. I can easily recommend it to fans of the show.

The history of shopping in gorgeous photos!

Similar to the Downton Abbey companion books, this one has great photos which draw you into Harry Selfridge's London store from it's opening day in 1909. The companion book to the PBS series, it has an intro written by series creator and my hero Andrew Davies (writer of 1995 Pride and Prejudice) and lots of insider info about how the show was conceived. I am not the greatest fan of Jeremy Piven (although I adore Frances O'Connor who plays his wife Rose) however the show is well done and the origin of the modern department store is fascinating. The show is based on another book, Shopping, Seduction & Mr. Selfridge which is also well worth reading. This one is a nice size as I found my Downton Abbey companion books a little unwieldy and heavy to hold for any length of time, but it is still large enough to do the sumptuous photos justice. Enjoy!

Kumar takes the reader back to the days of the British Raj in India, with a detailed study of Maharashtra. We see the structure of the Hindu society and the myriad castes and the intricate interminglings allowed [or disallowed]. There is also the interplay between this and the British administrators, who often introduced modern [ie. European] technological and scientific innovations.

Thus we see how the university system was established, largely in conformance with British guidelines. More broadly, the economic ideas of Adam Smith and others were also brought into Indian society. Largely it seems that free enterprise met little ideological or religious resistance from the local population.
