Well suited for my purposes

I purchased this as a useful way to exercise and alleviate pain in my hands and fingers.
As a bonus I get to improve my atrocious penmanship and keep alive something I fear is a disappearing skill. Most schools no longer teach it.
The book is well laid out with descriptions exercises, and practice sheets.
I plan to actually begin handwriting letters again.

I am currently using the Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pens,(Available on Amazon) but a ball point or pencil will work fine.

Indians are real, the Star People are too (Maybe)

This book was an excellent and most interesting work. Mrs. Clarke did a superb job detailing the stories of those she interviewed, coaxing them into being at ease with her. She also maintains a very high ethical standard, staying true to her word to them, not divulging the identities of an extremely shy people who do not want publicity or attention. They desire to live normal lives, even after experiencing events that would send a lot of us to the nut house. Ms. Clarke seems to have waited a good deal of time before writing this book. Most of the people she interviewed are now deceased (very convenient, wink, wink) and cannot be contacted. That, in itself would cause me to become suspicious of the work, without there being an ability of verification. Yet, while I read these stories I found them extremely believable. I am somewhat of a alien agnostic, I don't know if they exist or not. Call me a skeptical believer if you will. Some of the things talked about in the book, I doubt. But, there is a ring of truth in these stories that kept me engrossed in the possibility that they do indeed exist. Also, the fact that our government lies about this stuff, all the time, is definitely no big surprise to me. I highly recommend this book. The price for it seemed high when I ordered it, but I got my money's worth. I would do it again in a heart beat. Fascinating.

Review of "Encounters with Star People

I have been very fortunate to have known Ardy as a friend, colleague and teacher. One of Ardy's strengths is that she models what she does. This is very apparent in her book "Encounters with Star People." This is an excellent read for anyone. Montana State has two well-known writers Robert Persig and Ardy Clarke. I highly recommend owning and reading this book.

About the Author
Denise Guinn received her BA in chemistry from the University of California at San Diego and her Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. She was a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University before joining Abbott Laboratories as a Research Scientist in the Pharmaceutical Products Discovery Research Group. In 1992, Dr. Guinn joined the department of chemistry at Regis University, in Denver, Colorado, as Clare Boothe Luce Professor, where she taught courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and the General, Organic, and Biochemistry course for nursing and allied health majors.  In 2008 she joined the College of New Rochelle, where she teaches organic chemistry, biochemistry, and the general, organic and biochemistry course.  Her area of research is synthetic organic chemistry; she has published in the Journal of Organic Chemistry, the Journal of the American Chemical Society, and the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. She has two college aged sons, and lives in Nyack, New York, with her Golden retriever Buddy.

For the Chemistry Geek in You

'Essentials of General, Organic, and Biochemistry' is a great textbook. It includes many pictures, graphs, and other visuals. Also, there are practice problems, word definitions, and chapter recaps included in every chapter. Sometimes, it was a little hard to visualize the processes that the book discusses, but generally it was a good read. Of all my college textbooks, it was one of the more enjoyable ones to read.

If it isn't required, I wouldn't bother

My school is moving away from this text for their Intro to Chem class, and I think that is a very wise choice. The book does a passable job of laying out the bare bones basics of chemistry, but falls short when it comes to instructions on anything more complex such as conversions or calculating theoretical yields. I've never had to rely on Google as much as I did with this text.

Unless this is what your teacher demands, I'd look elsewhere where for an intro text.

I do, however, love the Amazon textbook rentals. Super affordable and super convenient.

Arrived on time and in good condition

I bought this for someone who will be a college freshman starting next year. He was worried about the course, so getting this early will give him a head's up. The guy at the college's bookstore said they might change the book this year, but he was probably lying. That's the problem with capitalism, some things just don't work well within the capitalistic model. What's more important, a young person's education, or this bookstore operator selling more books?

About the Author
Michael E. Haskew has been writing and researching military history subjects for over twenty-five years. He is the editor of WWII History magazine and The World War II Desk Reference with the Eisenhower Center for American Studies. He is the author of West Point 1915: Eisenhower, Bradley, and the Class the Stars Fell On; Appomattox: The Last Days of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia; and Tank: 100 Years of the World's Most Important Armored Military Vehicle, among numerous other publications. He lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Good, but with room for improvement

First off, what you'd probably like to know is what specific vehicles are included in the book. The book is divided into two sections: Classic Tanks 1918-60, and Modern Tanks 1961-Present.

Included in the classic section: A7V, Mark V Male, Pz III, STG III, Pz IV, Char B1 bis, T34/85, M3A3 Stuart, M3A3 Lee, Churchill, M4A4 Sherman, Panther, Tiger I, Tiger II, Cromwell Mk VIII, JS-3, Centurion, T54/55, M48, M41, AMX 13, PT76, Saladin, M60, BTR60-PA.

In the Modern tanks section: T62, M113, Chieftain, M109, ZSU-23-4, Leopard I, S-tank, BMP 1, M551 Sheridan, Scimitar, Marder, AAV7, T-72, Ratel, Merkava, Leopard II, M1A1 Abrams, M2 Bradley, Challenger I, M270 MLRS, Warrior, M1A2 Abrams, Leclerc, T-90, Challenger II.

Thus, there's a good selection but some frustrating "no-shows" (e.g. BT series, T34/76, KV series, SU series, Matilda, Valentine, Pz I & II, Hetzer, Jagdpanther, all US TDs, Pershing...

In each case, a particular variant is depicted. There are good sized exterior front, top and side views in color, along with a color oblique with cut-aways. Some cut-aways are more extensive than others. A few are little more than "port holes" that reveal little of interest and provide little sense of the tank's interior layout. Contrary to what the product description seems to suggest, there are no interior cross sections. Bummer! There is generally at least one interior photo, but they're not always that revealing. (In fairness, the interior of a tank isn't exactly the easiest of photographic subjects!) There may or may not be some pictures of related vehicles.

The data provided in the specifications chart for each vehicle is somewhat variable. The basics are there. In many but not all cases, it will break down the armor by location. In many but not all cases, it will give ground pressure and fuel capacity. Generally, there is performance data, but it is more extensive in some cases than in others. There's no data on track width or turret ring diameter.

Bottomline: For its modest price, this is a pretty good book which supplies a pretty good amount of information about a fairly decent selection of tanks. I don't regret adding it to my library. However, I wish that it really did have scale interior cross sections for each tank even if just in black and white. OTOH, if you want to know a whole lot of technical detail about such-and-such a vehicle, you may want to look elsewhere. This is good, but it ain't Hunnicutt, Jentz, or Spielberger.

Perfect for the young general-to-be.

My grandson is of that age where things that shoot or go boom are fascinating. This book is perfect for him. It offers beautifully executed paintings and drawings of tanks and armored fighting vehicles from the very first to the latest. Fifty tanks and AFVs are profiled here. Each receives about six pages beginning with a two page spread featuring an illustration with some callouts and perhaps a partial cut-away drawing, followed by well rendered elevations, a short narrative and some photos. Typically, there is information on variants and fairly detailed specifications as well.

The paper is thick and the printing simply gorgeous.

All in all, this is not a book that will satisfy the avid military buff with a hunger for endless detail, but it is more than adequate for the casual reader or the young boy with dreams of leading great armies (which, hopefully, he will never have to do).

Lots of good info but major mistakes.

This book has some nice images, photos and good descriptions. Unfortunately I noticed some very bad mistakes.
In the Sheridan tank section it describes an M-60 tank as a M-551 Sheridan (p. 217). Hard to understand hence it is so easily identifiable. However the biggest error I found was in the M-1A1 tank section. It shows a photograph of the M-1A1 interior with a full detailed description. Well the problem is that is the interior of an M-109 SP howitzer which is completely different from a M-1A1 Abrams (p. 265). How can a well researched book describe M-1 tank components that don't exist in the photograph? It goes on to describe a "gunners controls", "auxiliary sight" and "turret basket" all which the image does not have. The M-109 does not have gunner controls or auxiliary sight as described in the image. Those are azimuth and quadrant sight controls. Also the M-109 does not have a turret basket nor is shown in the image. I find myself at a loss why such a well researched book has this mayor error. I really hope that the author did not intend to purposely deceive the readers. If a M-1's interior image was not available, I think it would be better not to add an image of another vehicle and called something else.
BTW I have been a crew member of both vehicles in the U.S. Army.
