If you want to keep goldfish, and be a successful pet owner, get this book.
If you are new to goldfish keeping, and trusted the people in a pet store, please for the love of goldfish, get this book, and start on page 19. This will explain the importance of water quality, and how your fish cannot survive without your diligence. Fair warning- it's nerdy, but it's the most important part of keeping fish. Hands down.
You have control of your fish's life, and you can do this.
If you have ever thought that "nobody has ever felt more helpless than the owner of a sick goldfish" then for the love of your fish, get this book.
I know there are a TON of sources for fish answers on the internet, and even MORE questions. And those forums on big pet store websites? Don't trust them. 95% of those people have no idea what they're talking about.
You cannot keep a goldfish in a bowl. JUST SAY NO.
This book is a lot of compounded information about goldfish, and can be quite intense for beginners. Don't feel overwhelmed. It is a lot of knowledge you should know if you want to properly care for high maintence fancy goldfish.
The reason why big pet stores do not offer things like this is because their profit margin would suffer, and they would rather have you kill your animal not-knowingly, and come back to their store to buy more fish & equipment.

Fancy Goldfish is an in depth look at raising and caring for gold fish.

Many pages are spent on the fancy goldfish which may or may not interest you. I found it interesting in a weird sort of way. The photos are really fun and the lengths that some folks will go to is amazing.

What was helpful to me was the caring part, both in terms of setting up a healthy environment and identifying and caring for diseases. Caring for goldfish isn't as simple as a fish and a bowl. They really do require much more attention than most folks realize.

I wouldn't recommend this for the casual fish caretaker. But, for the interested it is a fascinating book, one which will be a reference for me for a long time.

This book is certainly for the serious collector. Many of the fish are from the best in the world, and rarely does one have the chance to even glimpse such fish in everyday life. They can probably only be seen in fish shows, and never in a pet store.
The photos are excellent and the book is very modern. The chapter on frequently asked questions is very useful and answers lots of questions for beginners and advanced fishkeepers alike.
There is a very thorough disease section.
The book is truly inspiring, yet it may lead you to feel a bit intimidated by the work needed to keep fish of such high calibre.

About the Author
Rudolf Steiner (1861 1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe s scientific writings. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.

This was a valuable companion to the text. It did not have an answer key so it took a lot of effort on the teacher's part to read through the material and find the answers. It would have been much nicer if had an answer key.

Just received this book - the "peak inside" feature almost killed it for me, as well as some other reviews about it giving "mixed" signals. It certainly does not give mixed signals. I plan to use the book as a tool this summer to help kids who are stuck all summer in the same class with kids of mixed ages (the "big kid" room) to help them to be more compassionate and caring individuals. We all have "buckets" and our bucket are targeted every hour of every day. However, we have the ability within us to fill our own bucket by filling those around us that need theirs to be filled. Great story for little ones!

Read this to my daughter every few nights. She has really taken to this story and look at other's differently. She thinks about how she treats people and if she's adding or taking away from their buckets. She can also tell me now that something I said or did affected her bucket. Very cute story.

I cannot even begin to describe the healing power of bucket filling in my own school. As an elementary school counselor, it's the #1 way I usually deal with kids when it comes to oh....EVERYTHING. I've taught this metaphor for years and it is built into our thinking and language. The kids use it for problem solving, bullying, friendship issues, home problems, helping others, expressing a need, describing their feelings, talking about a hurt and much more. Relationships are strengthened when students choose to live their lives by this philosophy.

I originally found out about bucket filling through author Carol McCloud's book Have You Filled a Bucket Today?. It's a neat picture book explaining just what is the business of "Bucket Filling." If you've been using this story (or even if you haven't) to explain this wonderful metaphor, then you ABSOLUTELY need How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids.

What makes this book so special is the focus is on a boy, Felix, and what happens to his bucket throughout his day. He wakes up in the morning with a pretty full bucket. But he spills the cereal and his mom scolds him. Ouch, hurt feelings. DRIP. I loved watching the students' reaction to that word. They hadn't heard bucket filling described that way. Felix gets to school and has a series of negative encounters with kids. DRIP. DRIP. All those positive feelings he started with start going away until his bucket is almost empty. '

But then something happens to stop the DRIPS. Felix's teacher gives him a compliment. DROP. The class is supportive of him and praises his effort. DROP! He starts receiving compliments and acts of kindness from others as the school day continues. DROP! His bucket starts to fill back up with positive feelings.

Here comes my favorite part. '' Once his bucket is filled back up he looks around the playground and notices everyone else has one too....and a lot of them need filling. He now has a real understanding of how it works. And so will your kids! So Felix gets right to it by being kind and helpful. DROP! DROP! This time there are two drops. When he fills another person's bucket, he fills his own too.

The students were SO excited when they saw the cover. I've been reading it the first couple weeks of school so kids can remember to start filling others' buckets immediately. I plan on reading it again throughout the school year. This is one of those stories they like to hear over and over again. It is very well written, the illustrations are perfect, and it speaks to kids. They completely relate to Felix and the ups and downs of his day. Using the "drips" and "drops" as a way to describe positive and negative interactions was easily understood by the students. We've started putting our new discovered language to use! ''Bucket filling is a way of life in my school. I hope you do the same in your school and home.

Hip Hop Curriculum

This particular book was very informative, enlightening and fun for the children. I run an African Centered Day Camp for 9 weeks and I am looking forward to implementing this curriculum. I encourage teachers, camp directors or administrators to review this book and pull out the pertinent information. It is the first comprehensive examination of the idea that violence is necessary to obtain, defend, and exercise freedom. The book also brings to the fore the opposing theme of nonviolent freedom, which can be found both within the Western tradition and among critics of that tradition.

Since the plebs first vacated Rome to refuse military service and win concessions from the patricians in 494 B.C., nonviolence and civil disobedience have played a critical role in republics and democracies. Abolitionists, feminists and anti-colonial activists all adopted and innovated the methods of nonviolence. With the advent of the Velvet Revolutions, the end of apartheid in South Africa and, most recently, the Arab Spring, nonviolence has garnered renewed interest in both scholarly publications and the popular imagination. In this book, Dustin Ells Howes traces the intellectual history of freedom as it relates to the concepts and practices of violence and nonviolence. Through a critique and reappraisal of the Western political tradition, Freedom Without Violence constructs a conception of nonviolent freedom. The book argues that cultivating and practicing this brand of freedom is the sine qua non of a vibrant democracy that resists authoritarianism, imperialism and oligarchy.
