Really the BEST-EVER!

I have been coordinating our church youth group for a year and a half and am still finding new, terrific games from this book. They are all fun games and many don't need lots of prep/supplies. I also have mostly a small group- about 5-10 so there are lot of games they can play. It is even great for our one large event of the year- our Lock-In. The big group games in there are great for 30 or so kids. If you have anything to do with a youth ministry or just need to entertain a big group of kids with safe, healthy, fun activities- GET THIS BOOK!

Use It Over and Over

We are always looking for easy and fun game ideas for youth- especially games with a point. I appreciate the fact that these games have been tested so we don't have to make our youth the "guinea pigs". Helpful hints are included throughout the book from the author to help make your games more successful. Furthermore, we learn how to avoid problems and common pitfalls during our game experiences. What a great resource to have on the shelf....I imagine we'll be pulling it out quite often over the years.

Fun and Games

Scattered throughout this book are Gaming Tips, which give essential suggestions and insights on everything from choosing, beginning, to leading a game.
I am new to leading a group of 8-12 yr. old girls in my church. I am not very creative when it comes to games and activities I am more of a preacher. So, I was looking for some help. This book gave me great ideas. I don't use every game, because some will not work. For the most part I have been using a new game within this book each week.
There are about two to three games per page. Especially the last chapter on how NOT to lead games with your youth group was great. I am new to this and need all the advice I can get!
I highly recommend this book for new and exciting games to play with your youth!

Sweet little ghost story

I read "The Spirits of Christmas" after reading both "A Gift of Ghosts" and "A Gift of Thought" so I don't know if it could be read as a stand-alone book. I think that you would have to have read "A Gift of Ghosts" to have the necessary background to enjoy the story. If you do have the background, then I'm sure that you would find "The Spirits of Christmas" to be very enjoyable as I did. The interactions of all the characters was great fun to read, especially the toddler who could see ghosts but not hear them and Akira, the main protagonist, who could both see and hear ghosts but who has never interacted with a child.

It didn't bother me, but some people might be disappointed by the fact that there is very little that is actually about the Christmas holiday except for the time of year that the story takes place. The characters themselves, both living and ghosts (and Rose, who might not be a ghost at all), have well-defined personalities with crisp, vibrant imagery that really brings the story to life. Sarah Wynde writes very well and there was only one missing word and no typos or spelling mistakes so the story flowed easily with no interruptions. Her style is both easy and pleasurable to read.

This is a lovely little addition to the Tassamara series so if you are familiar with the background, then I'm sure that you will enjoy this book. This book is free until Dec. 28th so hurry and download it. Happy reading!

What a lovely gift

This is a wonderful story, that is not so Christmas-y that you wouldn't enjoy it in July. The characters will be familiar to Tassamara readers and their thoughts and actions will warm your heart and make you wonder. I loved this story and I want to keep reading more and more about Akiva and Zane and Rose.

This is meant to be read by those who have read at least one of Sarah's novels. A lovely little long short story (too long for a short story - 819 locations). Loved reading about Akira and Rose(a ghost) again. Thanks Sarah.

This book is, in every way confusing and poorly written. It is poorly organized, making it extraordinarily difficult to understand the fundamentals of assembly language programming. There were also dozens of careless errors, some of which made concepts almost impossible to understand. Professors: Please do not inflict this book upon your students

The worst book on assembler ever written

It's clear the author is not a real author but some instructor somewhere. This book is no more than a bunch of incoherent notes full of mistakes and bad assumptions. Unfortunately, this is used as a text book in colleges. If a professor uses this garbage in class, DROP the class.

Pretty good, but has quite a few typo's.

Explained the fundementals well. I thought that it was for the most part readable. Sometimes had annoying typo's in examples that made things hard to follow.

Mostly good, but flawed for girls

My three and a half year old daughter really enjoys this book. It's written in a style that's entertaining and easy to understand. I like that the authors have included many types of families in the illustrations, and have tried to combat gender stereotypes by discussing all of the similarities about what boys and girls like (both boys and girls like active play; both boys and girls play with dolls). However, there is one flaw in the book that bothers me as I read it to my little girl. In the descriptions of the external physical attributes of boys and girls, boys' external genitalia is named, while girls' is not. Boys are described as having "a penis, a scrotum, and two openings." Girls, on the other hand, are described as having merely "three openings." And while there are indeed a penis and scrotum visible in the picture accompanying the boy's description, in the girl's, the little girl resembles a Barbie doll with a smooth genital area and three dots representing her openings. The little girl has no clitoris at all, and just a hint of labial folds. I understand that a clitoris may have been a little tougher to draw than a penis, but to completely excise a part of female genitalia in a book about the topic? What is a little girl supposed to think about that part of her anatomy? According to this book, it shouldn't exist and doesn't have a name. But if you have a daughter, you know that she knows it's there. The first time we read this book, my daughter was confused and wondered if she had a penis, because she said she had a "bump like that" and pointed to the picture of the little boy's genitals.

Since my daughter still likes to read this book, and since I do like the rest of it, I choose to just add in the words when I read it to her. I read that sentence as "Between their legs, girls, baby girls, and women have a clitoris, a vulva and three openings." I point to the picture and say "her clitoris is here, just above the opening where the pee comes out" (which is how the urethral opening is described in the book). It's not a perfect solution, and while I understand the authors' intent to rely on very simple descriptions, it would be great to know the reasoning behind completely omitting a visible part of a girl's body. We're already so squeamish about girls' genitals, calling their genitalia their flower, their bits, their woo-woo... is it too much to ask that in a book about their bodies, visible female parts should be represented and named?

A perfect primer for kids and their bodies

What I loved about the book was that it really emphasized how much boys and girls, men and women are ALIKE. It showed dads and moms feeding babies. Sure, one has to use a bottle, but he can still feed the baby. It showed both parents being, well, parents. It talked about how all kids, boys and girls "like to catch frogs, swing high up in the air, ride scooters, and make lots of noise." It talked about how we all have belly buttons, fingers, toes and nipples. It talked about all the ways we are the same.

Then, it talked about the couple of ways that we are different, and what those differences mean - that some of us are male, and some of us are female. (Though, now that I think about it, the author never used those words... It was always baby, girl, woman and baby, boy, man.)

This is NOT a sex-ed book for kids. Sex is never mentioned, not even when the topic of babies and becoming moms and dads comes up at the end of the book. This book really just answers one question - Who has what? And it does that very well.

This is an excellent primer for young children just starting to ask questions about their bodies (and their friends', parents', and pets' bodies.)

Perfect amount of information

My kid is six and this was exactly the kind of book I was looking for for an age appropriate lesson. The illustrations are adorable and provides a lot to look at in the scenes (lots of families, animals, sandwiches, etc).

Aside from the purpose of the story, there are also features of the book that most wouldn't notice but some will appreciate. It isn't just a sea of waspy white people, the family in the book appears to be mixed race. There are people at the beach of all ages, races, shapes, and sizes. There's a pregnant asian woman, a woman breastfeeding her child, a woman wearing a hijab, a child in a wheelchair, grandparents taking care of a child, two men with some children, one man is bottle feeding a baby (in other words, possibly a family with two daddies). Some families will love this aspect, others will not, but it's something I appreciated for the lessons I plan to give my family. Aside from simply what parts everyone has, it could also springboard into a lesson on how people look act or dress differently and the different ways in which people can be a family.

I'm glad I ordered this book.

About the Author
Steven J. Zaloga received his BA in History from Union College and his MA from Columbia University. He has worked as an analyst in the aerospace industry for over two decades, covering missile systems and the international arms trade, and has served with the Institute for Defense Analyses, a federal think tank. He is the author of numerous books on military technology and military history, with an accent on the US Army in World War II as well as Russia and the former Soviet Union.

An interesting book on the Attack on Pointe du Hoc with some factual errors

This book gives good background information on the strategic importance along with a detailed account of the attack on Pointe du Hoc, from both the air and land on D-Day and the days following.
There are some factual errors. The author states the RAF attack begain at about 4:50 am when F/L Gordon from 105 Squadron released his target flares over the target, then says this was followed by two more aircraft from 109 Squadron, once Gordon's aircraft had exited. This is incorrect.
The RAF official records show that the attack actually began at 04:46.50 when 109 Squadron's "HS-R" (F/L W.G Foxall/ F/O A.C. Wallace) released their target marking flares from 30,000' and were plotted to hit 70 yards northwest of the aiming point. 105 Squadron's "GB-H" (F/L Gordon / F/L Strachan) released their flares nearly a minute later at 04:47.48 from 18,000' and they were plotted to hit 140 yards west of the aiming point. Eight seconds after Gordon, 109 Squadron's "HS-T" (S/L P.A. Kleboe / S/L J.E. Jefferson) released their target flares also from 18,000', which were plotted to hit 220 yards southeast of the aiming point.
The book gives an excellent description and chronology of the events at Pointe du Hoc, contains many very good photographs and is accompanied by first hand accounts from the men that were there.
Worth reading and a good account of an important D-Day event.

About the Author

Jason W. Osborne is Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.  He is also Professor of Applied Statistics in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, with a secondary appointment in Public Health Science.  He teaches and publishes on "best practices" in quantitative and applied research methods. He has served as evaluator or consultant on projects in public education (K-12), instructional technology, higher education, nursing and health care, medicine and medical training, epidemiology, business and marketing, and jury selection in death penalty cases. He served as founding editor of Frontiers in Quantitative Psychology and Measurement and has been on the editorial boards of several other journals (such as Practical Assessment, Research, and Evaluation). Jason also publishes on identification with academics (how a student's self-concept impacts motivation to succeed in academics) and on issues related to social justice and diversity (such as Stereotype Threat). Worthwhile book with a misleading title

Well, it cost me $4 in postage to discover that "Best practices in data cleaning" is not about data cleaning, but mostly about the challenges of working with survey data. The author acknowledges upfront that his "data cleaning" includes activities undertaken both before and after data collection, and his first topic, power and sample size analysis, drives the point home. Among the other topics, outlier detection alone is what I would call data cleaning; handling of missing data and normalizing transformations - maybe.

Despite the middling rating, I like the book. Given the abundant evidence of lacking statistical expertise among social-sciences researchers - take the references cited here, or in "Understanding the new statistics" by Geoff Cumming - any educational effort is welcome, especially when delivered with an accessible, friendly writing style.

The misgivings come from the titular misnomer - SAGE, I want my $4 back - and, secondly, dissatisfaction with the statistics on display. I am not talking about the introductory nature of discussion - meaning that you will need to consult other references to understand how a particular method, and how it can be implemented - but about the suspicion that presented repertoire is a bit behind the curve. Consider "Data analysis using regression and multilevel/hierarchical models" by Gelman and Hill, for example - it's hard to believe that "Best practices in data cleaning" is more recent. R, simulation-based methods, "robust" or non-parametric methods, "exact" tests - absent or mentioned in a few words. ("Winsorizing", an antique "robust" method, is there, misspelled, and there is a simulation done in SPSS - filling four pages (!) with random numbers. It all feels very 1990s).

Overall, I appreciate "Best practices in data cleaning" as an accessible "awareness-builder" offering practical advice and many useful references - while flagging some reservations about said advice, or rather about what is left unsaid. Applied researchers in psychometrics should take a look. Page visitors looking for a book about data cleaning - check out "Data quality assessment" by Arkady Maydanchik.

PS. Normalizing transformations are given a lot of space in the book, and I wonder if the discussion is entirely accurate. On page 90, for example, the author seems to suggest that normality of data is a requirement of conventional statistical tests. I'd say that things are more nuanced - the central-limit theorem gets one asymptotic normality, but one deals with finite, and often small, samples - and note that since one is not always going to work in univariate setting (e.g, drawing histograms instead of running regressions), it's helpful to point out the difference between conditional and unconditional normality.

Comprehensive and logical

Best Practices in Data Cleaning by Jason Osborne provides a comprehensive guide to data cleaning. Although I have had a great deal of training associated with the process of setting up and reviewing data collection and analysis I had been away from the field for several years, and recent work required that I consult prior to beginning a new project. This book made the process of getting back up to speed enjoyable. I was very pleased by the step-by-step explanations provided, and found the book to be an excellent resource.

The angel "squadron" has been gathered. News of peace and joy are to be shared with a young girl named Mary, with shepherds on the hill, and the whole world. And this isn't just any news. This is the VERY IMPORTANT message announcing the story of the birth of Jesus Christ!This pageant is designed for a production with no set, no budget, no live musical accompaniment, and where the cast reads from their scripts. If you have a set, budget, live accompaniment, and decide to memorize it all, you can still perform this pageant. Cast members (and production staff) should be dressed to approximate shepherds, Mary and Joseph, wise men, and angels with costumes and props. Only two full cast rehearsals are needed. The cast is arranged so that only one speaker appears in more than one act. The group can rehearse all three acts (not including the music) during the first rehearsal! This allows each child to spend time practicing, rather than waiting for a turn to say their lines. The second rehearsal is just a matter of going straight through the script with actors and musicians. This pageant can be staged with as few or as many sets, costumes, and props as you desire. It works equally well with no costumes or sets (read with scripts in hand), as it does with a full production of costumes, scenery, and every word memorized. Vocal/piano scores for the sung music selections of the pageant are included. The arrangements of the Christmas carols used during and between the acts afford you the option of having a choir, a soloist, or instrumentalists, or others to participate in the pageant.

Congregation enjoyed it.

The children at our church performed this pageant last week, and the congregation really enjoyed it. It is a humorous play in 3 acts: 1) Mary is told by the angel about the birth of Jesus, and she and Joseph are told in Bethlehem by the hotel clerk that their reservation at the inn has been cancelled; 2) some shepherds on the hillside are told of the birth of Jesus by some angels, and 3) the wise men visit Herod's palace on their way to visit the holy family. The script is written such that a child only has to attend the rehearsals for the 1 act in which their character appears. We did this on 2 three-hour rehearsals: one for staging, and one dress rehearsal with all the extra angels, lambies, etc. The kids mostly learned their lines at home before rehearsals started. The script includes a CD containing many things, most of which I didn't need, but it did have a recording of a "junk band" (which is required in Act 2), and a recording of a trumpet giving a herald call, used when the angel appears, and also when Herod is announced in his palace.

The script, as I said, is humorous. For example, Mary, when visited by the angel, thinks she is a solicitor and asks her to put them on her "do not call list". Our congregation laughed at all the right places and seemed to enjoy the humor. There are many practical suggestions in the text accompanying the script.

Best Christmas Pageant Ever!

We did this at the first church I served & it went over so very well that I had to get it for my next church. Adding a bit of humor to the traditional story is just what the people need sometimes. We even added pogo sticks to the kings the first time around. Maybe this time it will be a skateboard - you never know how the Holy Spirit will move you to be creative when using this pageant! If you're wondering which pageant you should buy - look no further. This one will not disappoint!

good but not perfect

I choose this pageant for our church because I liked the promise of brief rehersals. The format worked well, the children practiced in individual acts two times, one all act run through and one dress rehersal. NO PROBLEM with that limited amount of time MAINLY because we had tryouts for parts two weeks in advance and then required the children to come to the first practice with lines memorized. Some used printed scrips as props (as suggested in book) but 90% were able to memorize no problem. TWO drawbacks... hence the three stars and not higher. While the dialogue in the three acts was engaging and clever, the lengthy "narrator" portions were deadly dull. We completely scrapped them for our own work. ALso, the music was much more complicated than we could manage so we just cut most of it out. Overall, I would recommend this series... and HIGLY recommend you NOT overpractice, otherwise it defeats the purpose of the format!
