Definitely worth reading

This book is a very informative overview of the creation of the US border, with it's small and unorganized beginnings all the way through to the more modern concept that we understand as 'border patrolling'. The text is easy to read but filled with documentation and historical evidence. Lyttle does an amazing job at flushing out some of the economic, social, and global affairs that led to the focus of the US borders on the Mexican side, as well as the reactions and role of the Mexican Government. Without a doubt a worthwhile read that offers a much needed perspective on the history of immigration in the US.

Must read for people interested in immigration

I think that Migra! is one of the most through and interesting books discussing the policies around the U.S.-Mexican border. Not only does she discuss the U.S. border patrol, she discusses how the relationship between the U.S. and Mexico largely impacted the practices and policies of the U.S. It's both fascinating and well-written as well as delving into the complex interplay between policy and enforcement.

Border Patrol, violence, and race

This book titles itself as a study of the US Border Patrol. It is that, but in a complex way. It studies the first 50 years of the USBP, but primarily examines the migration of Mexicans into the US and efforts to control it. Hernandez has written an interesting and compelling book about how the USBP originated as a fairly local organization that used a lot of violence to do its work. As it grew and transformed, it became more complex, changed tactics, and often had varying missions. This book also chronicles the changing and complex attitudes towards Mexican migrants in Texas and California. Many farmers wanted Mexicans for cheap labor, while most lower-income people opposed their impact on wages. The USBP fit into all of that, often at war with both migrants and farmers.

The book itself could have benefited from a better editor. A few areas were repetitive or poorly organized, but the reading itself is nonetheless interesting. This is not a casual read, certainly intended for an academic audience. But those who are highly interested in immigration and Border Patrol issues will find this a worthwhile read.

A keeper!

I thouroughly enjoy reading this book. The first chapters set up a framework for separations technologies. The rest of the book adds the important details. The first three chapters provide an excellent review of thermodynamics and mass transfer. In fact, I finally understood fugacity and how to estimate activity from equations of state after reading this book. The authors also incorporate principles of energy conservation not found in similar books. The topics include emmerging technologies in reactive distillation, membranes, and adsporption. Many HW problems are set-up for solution on process simulators. There are several chapters on advanced separations that will make this a valuable resource for lif-long learning. I wish I could have access to the chapters on solids processing - if they are anything like the rest of the book they would be useful. I will _NOT_ sell this book back at the end of the year. It's a keeper!

Aspen heavy

During my final year of undergrad coursework I used this textbook for my design courses. The good thing is Dr. Seader was the professor for my second design course. As a teacher I think he is great with an ability to effectively communicate theory and its practical application without getting caught up in the details. Unfortunately I felt this textbook tries to consolidate the knowledge he has gained in his career resulting in a very dense book. Some problems are solved using direct calculations but a large amount are done using Aspen (a program no one in my class had used) which I felt didn't adequately help develop sequential problem solving skills. The costing analysis theory is good but most of us used Peters & Timerhaus for homework. If you work with Aspen or want a detailed book this will satisfy your desires.

incredibly thorough, but difficult to wade through

As my professor for this class put it, "the good news is that this book is incredibly thorough. the bad news is that it's incredibly thorough." tough for an introductory text on the subject, mainly because the notation is different from most other books i've used, and the style of writing is not quite as straightforward as could be hoped. if i could add one thing to this book, it would be a general overview in each chapter -- the authors just jump into each topic without introducing the bigger picture, so it's easy to wonder "why are we doing this calculation?" then again, maybe a professor could take that role during lecture. as another reviewer noted, this book does have an excellent review of thermo and mass transfer; it was only during this class that i started to really understand these two subects in any kind of depth.

Phenomenal

Wow. Just, wow. In short, this is a great read for anyone who wishes to understand the context and culture surrounding the greater African independence movements of the last century.

To be honest, I wasn't too keen on this book at first. I thought it was cumbersome and almost redundant. The more I read, however, I realized that the style which Falola writes is something to be savored. Too often do we read books simply to get to the next word, sentence, page, chapter. Sorry for the corny cliche, but I think it applies here: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts when it comes to this book.

At first, the only parts of the book I enjoyed were the periodical African idioms and sayings. When I finally reached a point to where I could examine the totality of the message, I realized that interspersed in these memoirs is a much deeper understanding of Africa during a time of abrupt transition from a traditional culture to a foreign/forced modern one.

If at first you start to lose interest, keep reading. It's definitely worth it.

Listening to the elders

Growing up in Nigeria in the years around independence provides good material for a personal memoir. These must have been extraordinary times, full of hope and expectation for the emerging new country. For a growing teenager though, the issues were closer to home. Falola, well known scholar of African history, has used his personal experiences to create a rich innovative kind of memoir that combines his growing up during that time with events in his community and the country as a whole. The resulting book gives the reader vivid insight into a complex society with its intricate traditions, in particular those of the Yoruba culture. Falola writes an easy accessible style, often addressing the reader directly. He demonstrates his narrative skill and an ability to impart local events with gracefulness and humour. He demonstrates how the use of proverbs, idioms and traditional imagery has remained part of everyday discourse by interweaving sayings into his narrative. "A proverb is regarded as the 'horse' that carries words to a different level, investing them with meanings...".

Falola's account suggests that he was already at the age of 10 a curious youngster and an astute observer of people, relationships and events. His early fascination with trains led him to experiences beyond his age level that were to influence his standing in his family and community. After an unplanned train ride and its aftermath, that created upheaval in the family, he was transplanted to another branch of his family in a more rural sector of Ibadan, the city-state in Nigeria's south-western region. Not having taken notice of the hierarchical structure of his polygamous family, he realized only then which of his "mothers" is his birth mother. There he also learned to connect with the rich traditions of the local people who have maintained much closer links to their past than those in the urban centre. For example, children are given an additional name by the family, a praise name (oriki). This name should establish a link to a real or imaginary hero of the past. Such names should enhance the young person's deep character and his ambition to emulate the past bearer. Like a young detective he tracks an old woman, different from any he had seen in the neighbourhood. When he is finally confronted by her, the outcomes are an important lesson for his life and future. These early influences shape his thinking into his adult life.

While the chapters stand as independent stories or essays, they flow together easily as a portrait of a person in his time and place. He merges the memories of his childhood with his comprehension of circumstances as an adult. Understanding of his roots and the culture instilled in him led him to study the cultural traditions of the Yoruba people and the history of the land. His reflections on how the two religions, Islam and Christianity managed to co-exist with the rich African traditions are as pertinent today as they were during the sixties. So is his criticism of the trend among the younger generation to denigrate their own culture in the face of western influences. [Friederike Knabe]

The author gives the reader a breath taking, bird eye view of the cultural panorama of the Yoruba society, and the implications of growing up in its most complicated and sophisticated city of Ibadan. The uniqueness of this book lies in its ability to transcend academic and cultural boundaries. It is as good a history book as it is a novel; social scientists will find it valuable and educators will find it to be of great relavance. It is a story of life and of living. It is indeed a celebration of youth and its rites of passage. Humor, wit, and readability add color and lucidity to all pages of this book. Wild, weird, wide, and even scary at times, this is a memoir that will stand the test of time.

ANDREW KAKABADSE is Professor of International Management Development, Cranfield School of Management, UK. Kakabadse was the H. Smith Richardson Fellow at CCL, North Carolina, USA and is Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster; Macquarie Graduate School of Management; Thunderbird and at Swinburne University. His research covers boards, top teams and the governance of governments. He has published 26 books, 169 articles and 16 monographs. Transformed 'sames' but no references to main influences received

I always find it interesting reviews on leadership and more 'adds' and new insights on this important social role. What really upset me is when there are no references for the influences authors uses when writing a book. If you do not agree, see pages 198 - 200. Clearly the model used there is Elliott Jaque's and G. Stamp levels of work, complexity of work. But no references to them. Why not? Putting references will it decrease the importance of the work? Seeing this, I just cannot support the book since I see some lack of elegance.

About the Author
Pauline Gibbons taught postgraduate and undergraduate TESOL courses at the University of Technology, Sydney, for many years, and is now an Adjunct Professor at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. This is my new "go to" book when I'm thinking about my work with English Learners. Gibbons inspired me in the first chapter with the following: "Treating EL learners as the people they can become means that we see students not in terms of what they lack--in their case, full control of academic English--but as capable and intelligent learners who, with the right kind of support, are as able to participate in learning and achieve academically as their English-speaking peers."

About the Author
Victor Thorn founded Sisyphus Press in the fall of 2000, and is the author of twelve books, as well as ten other chapbooks. Understanding biblical true history strengthens your believe in Immanuel

This book presents an intricate linkages between historic events and stories, in a biblical context, in a way that really makes you think on the truth. It must have been written by a very literate and intelligent writer.

Especially the "truths" of the Old Testament, usually taken from Sumerian, Egyptian or Indian sources, neatly rewritten for Israel, are taken into question.

What remains after reading this book is enormous respect for the author and a sense for what you still can believe of the Bible, and this strengthens your belief in this way.
Especially the words of Jesus/Jeshua/Immanuel become more the single source of truth, and his truth sets you free.
