This book was not as good as I had hoped it would be

This book was not as good as I had hoped it would be. The story about the Queen finding a new passion for reading and how she managed to squeeze her new interest into her busy schedule is very endearing. However, the writing wasn't as great as I had expected. I recently saw the film "Lady in the Van" with Maggie Smith that was about Alan Bennett and thought it was quite interesting and I will be checking out other books written by Mr. Bennett.

From the great Alan Bennett - need I say more?

This is one of my very favourite books. First, it's a book about books and the joys of reading. Second, I'm a huge fan of the novella form. Third, it's smart and witty and endearing. I've read this a couple of times (and listened to Mr Bennett read it too).

From the moment those dogs wander away and "One" follows them to the book mobile, I knew I was in for a rare treat. I couldn't believe that she asked Norman if he knew Cecil Beaton. Talking about David Hockney and J. R. Ackerley and the Mitfords - all works and artists I'm familiar with.

The fact that Norman, a young gay man, is self-educating by reading books by and about other gay people is too ironic not to appreciate as I facilitate an LGBT book group with the same focus. Norman actually reminds me of me. I made that same trek through "gay" literature (it's an on-going trek). That he recommends these volumes to The Queen because they're basically the only books he knows is simply priceless. Perhaps that identification is one reason I cherish this novella so much. I also admire Bennett's wit and have read quite a number of the books and authors mentioned in this text.

I've read quite a bit of Bennett and seen a number of the films based on his stage work - A Private Function, The Madness of George III, The History Boys, The Lady in the Van, The Laying On of Hands: Stories and especially A Life Like Other People's - and I'm a huge fan of Beyond the Fringe (I've got a great DVD of the group). So, what I'm trying to say is that I came to this prepared to like it - and I did. I found it witty and amusing. I kept casting the film version in my mind - Imelda Staunton or Julie Walters.

I'm not going to go on - not now. I don't want to give too much away. Please, please, please, read and enjoy.

About the Author

ADAM GRIMES is the CIO of Waverly Advisors, an asset management and risk advisory firm headquartered in New York. He began his career as an independent trader focused on agricultural and currency futures, and moved on to manage a successful private investment partnership. Grimes's experience as a trader covers futures, equities, currencies, and derivatives, in time frames ranging from intraday to multi-month swings. Though he is primarily a discretionary swing trader, his methodology rests on a firm foundation of statistical and quantitative research. Grimes holds an MBA with an emphasis in finance and market microstructure, and has worked for a number of private investment firms, as well as having spent several years at the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Great Book. A Worthwhile Read and Will Be Useful as a Reference Tool.

I liked this book a lot. I have followed the author's writings since his days at "SMB Capital". His new work is at adamgrimes.com/blog. In my opinion, all of the author's work is worth reading. The book, "The Art and Science of Technical Analysis", is pretty hefty at over 400 pages. For me, there is a TON of relevant information within this book, so much that it's difficult to review, but I'll try.
The author starts right in with an explanation of "Expectancy" and "Market Edge". What, in the author's opinion, defines a "trader's edge"? It's made clear in the book that the opinion is that market's, MOST of the time, are very efficient. The reason I emphasize "most" is because it's the opinion of the book that edge is defined as being aware of the moments when the market is NOT efficient and in that zone is where trading edge exist. This concept is covered in the first 5 pages and the remaining 400+ pages the attempt is made to present or make clear when markets are not being efficient. The author states early on that psychology is important and critical, but one can have the best mental attitude and emotional discipline and yet, without an edge, he/she will lose. The bottom line, as stated directly in the book, is that one MUST have edge, a clear statistical edge, and if this doesn't exist, everything else is futile. This entire book is about creating that edge.
Charts are broken down at first by showing simply swing pivot points. Then the moves within the swing are broken apart. Then the author gets into multiple time frame trading. How the higher time frame "controls" the lower time frame. I do a LOT of this in my own trading and it's very interesting. None of this is new per se, it's the author's approach that is new. I think what I'm trying to say is that we might know about multiple time frame trading, but if someone enables us to see something we haven't seen before then I think this is worth the time.
The author then gets into the "Wykcoff Market Cycle". There are 4 parts to this cycle and most traders I'm sure are aware of "Accumulation", "Markup", "Distribution" and "Markdown". Most traders are aware of this but it's the interface between the end of one cycle and the beginning of another on which the book concentrates. The author states that it's the miscalculation of these phases where losses and dangerous trading situations exist. A considerable amount of time is spent on deciphering these transition modes. These insights, for me, were new, interesting and seem valid.
The next part of the book is on "Market Structure". The first stop within this section is "trends". The author talks about what defines a trend and talks at length about trend trading, but also in this section "range trading" is discussed. The author states that failed breakouts are one of the most common patterns in trading. How to determine a failed breakout from a "legitimate" breakout is very difficult but I really believe that the author's insights into this area of trading can be very helpful.
As you go deeper into the book you see, and the author explains, there are 4 types of trades. There is trend continuation, trend termination, support and resistance holding and support and resistance failing. Now, these are the 4 types of basic trades but there are countless permutations of these formations. Each of these 4 types of trades is more appropriate during one market cycle then another. It can get confusing. This book does a more than adequate job at clarifying these trades.
The next part of the book gets into "Practical Trading Templates". In this chapter/section the author list trading patterns, or rather potential trading patterns. There's a lot here, but essentially there are Primary and Secondary patterns. The Primary trades are breakouts, pullbacks and trades from "failures".
The author then devotes a chapter to "Tools For Confirmation". This chapter I liked a lot since one of my several weaknesses as a trader is staying with the trade to fruition. I especially like his analysis of multiple time frame confirmations. I like the concept of paying attention to the highest time frame and then going down from the top.
There is an entire chapter on Risk Management.
In the appendix the author analyzes certain indicators, one of them being the MACD. He states that any trader should know his tools inside and out. They should know how the tool was designed and exactly what it is and what it's intended to be. I use MACD in my trading and I'm guilty of the exact type of ignorance about which the author speaks. I read this segment many times and I think it's excellent.

All in all, this is a meaty book and I read it twice. I'm still re-reading certain parts and I took a lot of notes and underlined a lot of points. I don't write many reviews and as far as trading books go my feeling is that they are long on price and short on relevance. I don't feel that about this book at all. The points are presented in a unique way and I like that. It makes me think about trading differently and enables me to see something I've looked at many times in a different way. That is certainly worth the price of a book. I'm working with some of the points and it will take some practice. In my opinion, this is definitely a worthwhile read. The author's blog is also a worthwhile read. Hope this helps.

Adams book is by far the best I have read in putting the market in context ...

Been trading for about 4 years and have read numerous books, watched webinars and took classes. Although there is a lot to learn and absorb, the main problem I have encountered is an organized and logical presentation of trading concepts. Adams book is by far the best I have read in putting the market in context where I can make sense of the trading puzzle.

His teaching of random markets, (the majority of times), with how to recognize supply and demand imbalance opportunities,(at certain times), is an eye opener. My trading has improved immensely and for the first time I have a sense that consistent profitability in the market is possible with identifying, under-standing and internalizing your "edge".

There is a saying, "When the pupil is ready the teacher will appear". If your ready, Adam Grimes is a great teacher. I highly recommend this book.

Could be the best primer on Technical Analysis ever written...

Grimes provides nothing less than a complete methodology for analyzing price action. His book is exhaustive and rigorous but organized in such a meticulous manner that there's refreshing simplicity to his presentation, which is just crystal clear on every topic. Grimes is willing to acknowledge and confront the issue of randomness with careful consideration, which I think is something most traders would often rather not acknowledge. It's alarming how frequently EMH is either ignored or casually dismissed in trading literature. The very notion of price randomness was a full-on system-shock to my psychology early in my trading days. If you are new trader, deal with it, and deal with it early. This book will hep with that and will absolutely refine your thinking. It's a gift and it may frankly be the best primer on Technical Analysis ever written. I have never read anything better.

Poorly written and riddled with inconsistencies.

I've been shopping Amazon for years but this is the first time I was compelled to leave a review. I've been doing IT security, server administration and general networking for roughly 15 years now. I've read beautifully written, well organized works of genius (Shon Harris - CISSP All-in-one..., Nemeth/Snyder/Hein - Linux Administration Handbook, etc). I've also endured a few slapped-together, ill-composed, tomes of wasted wood.

This book qualifies as the latter. There is little - if any - flow to the way the book is written. It's as if random sentences on a given subject were strung together to complete the book. Throughout the book you find paragraphs that simply restate the information provided in the preceding paragraph. You really get the impression the author was forced to crank this out to meet an early deadline. Assuming you can choke through the text, you'll find numerous contradictions and errors among each chapter's Q&A.

Frankly, I'm stunned Sybex would publish this drivel.

I had no problems with the seller. The used book arrived on schedule and looked brand new.

Disclaimer: I have not finished reading this book, and I'm not sure I want to.

I bought CEH Certified Ethical Hacker Study Guide on Amazon because it is the most recently published (2010) of several CEH study guides and because it has been through more than one edition. Had I been able to leaf through the book for about five minutes, I would have put it back on the shelf.

Consider these passages:

"Most hacking attempts occur from within an organization and are perpetuated by employees, contractors, or others in a trusted position." (p 8)

"Buffer overflows and SQL injection are used primarily against application servers that contain databases of information." (p 11)

If you know enough about information security to see the problems with the above statements, would you want to spend your time reading the rest of this book? More importantly, if you don't know enough about information security to see the problems with the above statements, should you entrust your professional development to this book?

Here's another profound insight:

"Many ethical hackers acting in the role of security professionals use their skills to perform security evaluations or penetration tests. These tests and evaluations have three phases, generally ordered as follows: Preparation, Conduct Security Evaluation, Conclusion." (p 17)

How about a Review Question from the end of Chapter 1:

5. The security, functionality, and ease of use triangle illustrates which concept?
A. As security increases, functionality and ease of use increase.
B. As security decreases, functionality and ease of use increase.
C. As security decreases, functionality and ease of use decrease.
D. Security does not affect functionality and ease of use.

Ready for the answer?

"B. As security increases, it makes it more difficult to use and less functional." (p 29)

Are you catching my drift? If a book has problems like this with the easy concepts, how much confidence should be placed in its more technical sections?

I'm not here to flame Kimberly Graves, who might otherwise be a very fine author. However, based on my experience with the first three chapters, I'm not inclined to commend this book to the potential reader. I really hope there are better study guides out there.

I'll close with a message from Neil Edde, Sybex Vice President and Publisher:

"With each of our titles, we're working hard to set a new standard for the industry. From the paper we print on, to the authors we work with, our goal is to bring you the best books available." (p v)

Keep trying, Neil. And you might consider boosting the copy editing budget while you're at it. Start your editors off with this paragraph:

"Checking for open ports is the second step in the CEH scanning methodology. Port scanning is the method used to check for open ports. The process of port scanning involves probing each port on a host to determine which ports are open..." (p 69)

UPDATE:

Well, I've made it to the fifth chapter, and I AM stopping. Although the book was revised in 2010, it appears that parts of it have not been updated since the heyday of Windows 2000. The text itself reads more like a set of lecturer's notes, hastily pulled together for publication.

As a study guide, it's starting to create more questions than answers about what's going to be on the exam. I may come back to it later, but at this point I'd rather not clutter up my head with useless (and possibly questionable) material.

I would caution the people who are using this text as an introduction to "ethical hacking" -- this book may (or may not) help you get that cert, but it's not giving you a very useful picture of the field. There are much better information security books out there. Unfortunately, none of them appear to be CEH-specific.

I'd recommend skipping the first 100 pages of the CEH Study Guide. Try Gray Hat Hacking (3rd edition) for a far more realistic introduction to the field of ethical hacking. Then go to Hacking Exposed (6th Edition) for coverage of footprinting, scanning, and enumeration. You'll come back to these books anyway, if you stay in this field, so it's not money wasted. Use the CEH Study Guide to help you outline your own crib sheet for the test. But watch out, because a lot of things have seem to have happened since this text was written.

Overall a good source to use to study for the CEH exam. THe book does not includes some of the information you need to know on bluetooth and voip attacks but this info can easily be found by making google your friend. Much better then most of the official CEH books.
